OWBC: Breeding Season at Horicon Marsh Field Trip

August 6 @ 6:00 am – 12:00 pm

Ozaukee Washington Bird Coalition Breeding Season at Horicon Marsh Field Trip

Join veteran birder Carl Schwartz on a late summer field trip to Horicon Marsh. Special focus will be on finding any recently reported eBird rarities as well as sorting through a huge proliferation of all sorts of recently fledged waterbirds. Raptors will be prowling the marsh which should be chock full of ducks, rails, herons, both bittern species, two and maybe three species of terns, and shorebirds already returning from their northern breeding grounds. We will especially be on the lookout for resident Whooping Cranes and Black-necked Stilt fledges. Horicon Marsh has many hotspots which we will canvass as time and weather allow, e.g., Old Marsh Road, Main Dike Road, Ledge Road, the Auto Loop Road, Highway 49, Marsh Haven, and other places reported as exhibiting significant activity.

Meet-up will be at Park & Ride lot at the intersection of Highway 33 and Interstate 41 (just east of Allenton, address below). We will carpool from there as much as possible. Some hiking is likely so wear appropriate footwear and clothing; also bring a water bottle and sunscreen. This trip is sponsored by the Noel J. Cutright Bird Club.

Breeding Season at Horicon Marsh

August 5 @ 6:00 am – 12:00 pm

Breeding Season at Horicon Marsh Sponsored by the Cutright Bird Club and the Ozaukee-Washington Birding Coalition

Our meetup location will be the Park & Ride Lot at the intersection of Highway 33 and Interstate 41 (just east of Allenton); we will carpool from there to the greatest extent possible. We plan to watch eBird reports and visit areas around the marsh where the most activity has been reported. Potential sites include (Main Dike Road, Ledge Road, the east and/or west ends of Old Marsh Road, Highway 49, Marsh Haven and the auto loop — as time and weather allow). We expect to find a variety of shorebirds and water birds (ducks, rails, bitterns and herons), pelicans and raptors — as well as resident and early migrant passerines. There will likely be some hiking involved, and it could be warm, so you probably want to carry a water bottle and sunscreen.

Group limit: 22
