OWBC: Diversified Birders

March 18 @ 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Ozaukee Washington Bird Coalition: Diversified Birders

This program was rescheduled from March 12 to March 18.

Rita Flores Wiskowski, is the Milwaukee area coordinator for the BIPOC Birding Club of Wisconsin. She is also an avid birder and citizen science enthusiast who also serves on the board of the Wisconsin Metro Audubon Society, where she has been tasked with creating diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. Her goal is to help to make birding safe and accessible for everyone. One of her biggest joys is to be with someone as they discover the joy and excitement of birding for the first time. Rita believes that the more voices and experiences we bring to this hobby, the better our enjoyment, the stronger our conservation efforts, and the more promising our future will be.

OWBC: The Cedarburg Bog

February 12 @ 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Ozaukee Washington Bird Coalition: The Cedarburg Bog – Formation, Hydrology, Ecology, and Uniqueness

PLEASE NOTE: DUE TO THE INCLEMENT WEATHER, THIS PROGRAM WILL BE VIRTUAL ONLY (not in person)

Presented by Jim Reinartz, president of the Friends of the Cedarburg Bog and former UWM Field Station director. Glaciation of the Cedarburg Bog and UWM Field Station area created pronounced topographic relief in the Bog’s basin and adjacent uplands comparable to that in the Kettle Moraine. The large size and slope of the wetland that developed in the low-lying basin results in a complex pattern of water movement responsible for a mosaic of nearly every major wetland plant community found in Wisconsin. The Cedarburg Bog is regionally unique as the last remaining large wetland with pre-settlement plant communities that were once the dominant wetland types in southeastern Wisconsin.

OWBC: Year-round movements of Rough-legged Hawks wintering in WI

January 8 @ 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Ozaukee Washington Bird Coalition: Year-round movements of Rough-legged Hawks wintering in WI

The OWBC is partnering with the Southern WI Bird Alliance to offer this program. From 2021-2022, nine GPS transmitters were attached to wintering Rough-legged Hawks in Wisconsin. Many of these transmitters are still functioning and have provided multiple years of full annual cycle movements. Come learn about the year-round movements of Rough-legged Hawks wintering in the great state of Wisconsin, and how these nine birds fit into the broader Rough-legged Hawk Project that has tracked nearly 200 hawks throughout North America.

Neil Paprocki recently completed his PhD at the University of Idaho studying differential migration in birds. Neil has been a professional ornithologist for 17 years and has been working with Rough-legged Hawks for nearly 15 years.

Ducks of Wisconsin Field Identification Workshop

2-Part Series: March 4 & 8

Ducks of Wisconsin Field Identification Workshop

Learn all about Wisconsin ducks with our guest speaker Jeff Bahls, President of the Horicon Marsh Bird club, Wood Duck Society board member and 2018 recipient for the Wisconsin Society of Ornithology bronze Passenger Pigeon award! As an avid birder and duck hunter, Jeff has a wealth of information to share with bird enthusiasts on the life history of some of his favorite duck species, where and when to find them and how to identify them in the field.

This workshop is a two-part series. You can attend both or just one part. The first portion will be an indoor lecture-discussion held on-site at Riveredge Nature Center with the option to join virtually over zoom. For the second portion, participants will travel to Horicon Marsh Wildlife Area, a highly diverse bird spot in WI and the largest cattail marsh in the US, where Jeff will lead a tour of Horicon’s duck ‘hot spots’ and highlight duck species identification techniques in the field.

The field portion on March 8 will be held entirely outdoors. It will involve walking and standing on grassy or graveled trails. Be sure to dress for the weather and in layers. Wear suitable walking or hiking shoes. The back-up bad weather date for the field portion is March 15.

Transportation to Horicon Marsh will NOT be provided by Riveredge. Participants will meet at the Horicon Marsh Education Center at 7:45 am on March 8, prepare (use bathrooms, etc.), and then leave for the walk at 8:00 am. Punctual arrival is important as it may be difficult to find the group once the walk has begun.

March 14 @ 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm

Tea & Topics Beavers in the Milwaukee River In Person and Virtual

Beavers are ecosystem engineers with the ability to build and maintain diverse wetland habitats. Beaver ponds have the potential to store and filter floodwater and increase the quality and quantity of habitat for fish, birds, mammals, and other wildlife. Cheryl Nenn from Milwaukee Riverkeeper to discuss the current beaver populations within the Milwaukee River Basin, how humans are partnering with beavers around the world to reduce flooding and increase wetlands, and how beavers might be able to play a larger role in our watershed in the future.
