Since the start of the Milwaukee River Lake Sturgeon Rehabilitation Program in 2006, over 100 sturgeon have been re-captured in various WDNR surveys. The goal of the project has been to:
-Re-establish a self-sustaining spawning population of Lake Sturgeon in the Milwaukee River system
-Annually stock 1,000 fingerlings using a streamside rearing facility
-Develop sturgeon population assessments in Milwaukee River
-Adjust methods as knowledge develops to improve survival and return to the river
-Improve habitat where needed and possible
Come hear about the status of the program and bring your questions!
Pre-registration is not required. All ages are welcome! This program is free to attend, but donations are greatly appreciated!

CRP Lecture Series: Return the Sturgeon Project
Lake sturgeons are the oldest and largest native fish found in the Great Lakes ecosystem. For a variety of reasons they were extirpated from the Milwaukee River over 100 years ago. In an attempt to help return this ancient fish to its ancestral waters, the Wisconsin DNR and Riveredge Nature Center have been raising lake sturgeon at Riveredge in a streamside rearing facility. The goal is to raise 1,000 to 1,500 fish every year for 25 years which will provide enough mature adults to support a breeding population of lake sturgeons in Lake Michigan. The on-site project coordinator, Mary Holleback, will discuss the biology and ecology of this large fish as well as the lessons learned along the way and how the public can support this unique and exciting restoration project.
No pre-registration required, but space is limited to the first 30 guests.
