Garlic Mustard Pull-A-Thon

May 7 @ 9-11, 11:30-1:30, 2-4, 4:30-6:30

Garlic Mustard Pull-A-Thon

On Tuesday May 7th, 2024 from 9am-6:30pm Riveredge Nature Center will be hosting a Mustard Pull-A-Thon as a part of Southeastern Wisconsin Invasive Species Consortium’s Annual Garlic Mustard Pull-A-Thon. Learn more about SEWISC Pull-a-thon and Riveredge here!

With the help of extraordinary volunteers Riveredge will be able to reclaim a significant portion of the land at the Mayhew Woods from invasive Mustard plants. The pull-a-thon is a competition, a fundraiser, and a way for people to join together to have a positive impact on their environment. Our natural areas need your help to avoid the damage that invasives cause!

With timeslots at 9am, 11:30am, 2pm, and 4:30pm volunteers will join Riveredge staff for 2 hours of mustard pulling. All supplies will be provided! This opportunity is open to individuals and groups of up to 100 people at a time. Volunteers may be as young as 13 years old with supervision by an adult as well as a signed waiver for anyone under 18.

Pre-registration is required by May 3 at 11:55 pm.

Volunteers should park and meet at Fireman’s Park in Newburg (address below).

Please reach out to Hannah Sedgwick (hsedgwick@riveredge.us) with any questions or requested accommodations. We look forward to working with you in May!

Ducks of Wisconsin Field Identification Workshop

March 5 @ 6 pm – 8 pm and March 9 @ 7:45 am – 12 pm

Ducks of Wisconsin Field Identification Workshop

Learn all about Wisconsin ducks with guest speaker Jeff Bahls, President of the Horicon Marsh Bird club, Wood Duck Society board member, and 2018 recipient for the Wisconsin Society of Ornithology bronze Passenger Pigeon award! As an avid birder and duck hunter, Jeff has a wealth of information to share with bird enthusiasts on the life history of some of his favorite duck species, where and when to find them and how to identify them in the field.

This workshop is a two-part series. The first portion on March 5 will be an indoor lecture-discussion held on-site at Riveredge Nature Center with the option to join virtually over zoom. For the second portion on March 9, participants will travel to Horicon Marsh Wildlife Area, a highly diverse bird spot in WI and the largest cattail marsh in the US, where Jeff will lead a tour of Horicon’s duck ‘hot spots’ and highlight duck species identification techniques in the field.

The field portion will be 4 hours long and will be held entirely outdoors. It will involve walking and standing on grassy or graveled trails. Be sure to dress for the weather and in layers. Wear suitable walking or hiking shoes.

Transportation to Horicon Marsh will not be provided by Riveredge. Participants will meet at the Horicon Marsh Education Center at 7:45 am on March 9, prepare (use bathrooms, etc.) and then leave for the walk at 8:00 am. Punctual arrival is important as it may be difficult to find the group once the walk has begun.
