OWBC: Owl Prowl at Lac Lawrann

November 11 @ 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm

Owl Prowl at Lac Lawrann Ozaukee Washington Bird Coalition

Calling all owl lovers! Join veteran birders from the Ozaukee Washington Birding Coalition as we prowl the woods, swamps, and fields of Lac Lawrann Conservancy. We will be on the hunt for permanent residents like Great Horned, Barred, and Eastern-Screech Owls as well as migratory or temporary residents such as the diminutive Northern Saw-whet Owl. Show up with your fingers crossed — owls are sometimes very fickle about showing themselves! There are no guarantees when it comes to owling!!!

Details: Meet in Lac Lawrann’s main building, the Maurin Center, at 5:30pm, please go down the ramp to the left to the set of doors for a short presentation followed by an approximate 1 1/2 hour night walk. Bring binoculars, water, and a small flashlight for walking on uneven, unlit paths after dark. We will be standing in place for extended periods of time so dress warmly, e.g., a warm hat, gloves, and good warm walking shoes or boots. You may want to eat a snack or early dinner before arrival. Note: If there are strong winds, heavy precipitation, and/or single digit temperatures, this outing may be postponed. We will let you know by email in the event of postponement. This outing is not recommended for children under the age of ten. This is a no charge event offered by Lac Lawrann Conservancy in conjunction with the Ozaukee Washington Birding Coalition. Space is limited to 12 participants.

This program takes place at Lac Lawrann Conservancy. See below for their address.

This program is geared toward adults, but ages 10+ are welcome.

Project Snowstorm

Banding and Tracking of Snowy Owls and Red-shouldered Hawks in Wisconsin: Where Were They Before and Where Are They Going Next?

Every winter, Snowy Owls drift down into our fair State in search of food and maybe also adventure(!?!) Not too long ago hundreds of “”Snowies”” were scattered across the Wisconsin landscape. Will we have another irruption in 2022? This charismatic species of Harry Potter legend has captured the hearts and imaginations of Wisconsinites who have been lucky enough to have seen one in the wild. What drives these irruptions and where do these iconic birds go from here? Red-shouldered Hawks, another iconic species, are resident breeders in some areas of the state but rare elsewhere. So what’s their story? Where are they headed to as the Snowy Owl descends and what is their pattern of movement across the land?

Gene Jacobs, researcher and raptor specialist affiliated with the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, has been capturing and banding owls and hawks of all kinds for more than 50 years. Join us in person or by Zoom at 7 PM on January 5, 2022 at Lac Lawrann Conservancy where Gene will share some of his most remarkable findings about these two birds of prey. (Note: Gene may be accompanied by a very special feathered guest!)
