Control burn conducted on Riveredge prairie.

While Riveredge has been a practitioner of prescribed fire since the start of our first prairies, we have not actively studied it.  Over the next 3 years we will be studying fire in our restoration prairies, oak woodlands, and wet meadows to determine which combination of variables (fire intensity, relative humidity, temperature, fuel moisture, wind speed, and season of burn) has the greatest effect on native and non-native woody plant kill.  Riveredge is the eastern-most research site for this statewide study.

Results from the entire study will advise fire practitioners throughout the Midwest.  Locally, we will utilize our site-specific data to better reduce invasive and native species dominance where needed.
