Virtual NJC Bird Club | Special screening of “BIRDERS: The Central Park Effect”

July 7, 2020 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

After round-robin introductions and an illustrated compilation of our monthly checklist, we have an opportunity to watch a lyrical documentary that is both timely and timeless. The showing comes on the heels of a national awakening to the perils of being Black in America – illustrated by the Central Park confrontation between birder Chris Cooper and a white woman who falsely complained that a Black man was “threatening me and my dog” after the man asked her to leash her dog.

In the film, made in 2013, a diverse group of full-of-attitude New Yorkers reveals how a hidden world of beautiful wild birds in the middle of Manhattan has upended and magically transformed their lives. But  what really makes this film shine is the extraordinary photography of the Central Park birds themselves, through all four seasons. Absolutely gorgeous. “The Central Park Effect” is a concise and wonderful introduction to birding, a hobby that can easily become an obsession, one that opens our eyes and heart to the beauty and preciousness of Nature.
