Science for Everyone – Peregrine Falcon Recovery Program

November 15, 2016 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Free

Peregrine falcons were extirpated from the eastern and central portions of the US in the 1960s, largely as a result of impacts from the use of DDT as a pest control. Early reintroductions began in the 1980’s, and by 1987 the first naturally reproducing falcons were observed in Wisconsin. We Energies became involved in the falcon recovery in the early 1990s. Greg Septon, falcon researcher, approached the company with an opportunity to sponsor the release of captive-produced falcons and later to host artificial nest sites for falcons to nest and reproduce naturally at their power plants. Since the late 1990s, nearly 50% of all natural falcon reproduction in Wisconsin has occurred at power plant sites across the state. Come learn more about this remarkable recovery and the vital roles industry partnerships have played in it.
