2020 Riveredge Ride: Going Fully Digital

There is nothing we love more than celebrating the Riveredge Bike Ride each summer, however, given the current COVID-19 situation and public safety orders, we have been faced with the tough reality of re-envisioning our June 2020 event. Keeping everyone as safe as possible is our paramount priority. Having so many people preparing, eating, drinking, filling water bottles in the same place at the same time just presented too many concerns. So we've pivoted to a fully digital ride for 2020!

We are going virtual and the ride will be June 20th-30th. Registration for the 2020 Riveredge Ride closed on Friday, June 12.

What does that mean? A digital ride is still a bike ride, however this year you'll be on your own to create your own route, instead of one day with a ride starting at Riveredge. Participants will have two weekends, with the week in between to complete rides. To participate in raffle challenges, please post on your social media with #2020RiveredgeRide and tag Riveredge Nature Center on the platform. Helmets are still required.

Staff and volunteer planning committee members are actively creating some suggested routes and challenges. Check back for updates and more details!

Your registration for the virtual ride still includes much more than just your ride! Riders will also receive one raffle ticket per adult registration, multiple coupons and offers from local businesses AND a special Riveredge Ride t-shirt (the standard included shirt is 50% cotton/50% polyester; you can upgrade to a 100% polyester performance shirt for just extra $5 by choosing the add-on from the store).

After Registering, you will receive instructions on how to earn more raffle tickets by completing challenges. The more you choose to participate in, the more chances you have to win! Prizes include two brand new bicycles and a $100 gift certificate from Wheel and Sprocket.

You will have the option to pick up your ride materials inside the Riveredge Visitor's Center (masks are required indoors) June 18th-20th or have your packet shipped to you.

The ride takes place June 20 - 30! Riders have 10 days to complete rides and participate in the challenges.

Online registrations close at noon on Saturday, June 5 to secure 2020 t-shirts. You can also register to participate June 6 - June 13 and receive the same great packet but with 2019 t-shirts. Riders have the option of having packets shipped for an additional fee, or packets can be picked up curbside at Riveredge Nature Center from June 18 - June 20 during hours when the Visitor's Center is open.

WHY RIDE RIVEREDGE?
A Ride That's Naturally Special

For 28 years, the Riveredge Bike Ride has been all about the experience. The experience of getting out the door, on your bike, and into the gorgeous Kettle Moraine scenery. This year, we're inviting riders to explore between June 20 - June 30 and to explore Wisconsin roads and trails as often as schedules allow. Think of the 2020 Riveredge Ride as an extended bike riding holiday!

Digital Route Options

In traditional years, the ride offers 7 different route options from 8 to 100 miles, all focused on exploring the natural beauty and small-town charm our little corner of Wisconsin has to offer.

This year, we're encouraging participants to engage in their favorite rides starting from home, or to embrace this occasion to explore some new territory in our beautiful Wisconsin scenery.

Make A Week Of It!

Throughout the history of the Riveredge Ride, the experience has always been tied to one location and one day. This year, however, you've got a total of 10 days in which to go exploring under pedal power.

We encourage you to take this opportunity to see how much riding you can enjoy in the span of two weekends and the week in-between.

It's For A Great Cause

Not only is the ride a great time, it's also one of Riveredge's biggest fundraisers of the year! Your participation helps to protect 379 acres of wild Wisconsin and connect tens of thousands of community members with the natural world each year.

While many of us have been working from home, this iteration of the digital Riveredge Ride is both an opportunity to benefit Riveredge, and a reason to get yourself out of the house and into the fresh Wisconsin air.

The Routes

In past years, we've provided specific routes from 7 - 100 miles in length. We're keeping these listed below in case you'd like to explore similar routes.

These routes take riders along the banks of the Milwaukee River, through a canopies of trees, coasting down a hills surrounded by swaying prairie plants, and along the shoreline of Lake Michigan.

And remember, as we always like to say, it's a ride, not a race! We encourage you to ride at your own pace, set your own goals for the day, and take time to enjoy the view!

NOTE: Due to scheduled construction along our traditional routes, we would have had detours if the 2020 Riveredge Ride had taken place as in previous years.

Please check in advance of your ride to ensure that your planned route is open and free of construction or detours.

Safety Rules And Reminders

Your safety is our biggest concern! It is very important to note that the Riveredge Bike Ride is NOT A RACE and the routes/roads are NOT CLOSED.

  • That means you'll be sharing the roads with vehicles, so rules of the road must be observed and single file riding is required.
  • We encourage pre-ride bike safety checks in advance of the riding week. Right now bike shops are busy and experiencing parts both parts shortages and extended wait times for maintenance. We encourage you to visit one of our bike shop sponsors for parts and maintenance well in advance of the ride.
  • Helmets are required. Bike mirrors are recommended.
  • Make sure you have enough water, or are certain of locations where water and food can be acquired.
Their Support Makes It Possible

A HUGE thank you is in order to the sponsors who help make this ride possible. If you're looking to support companies who, like you, care about the community, cycling, and conservation, look no further!
