Natural Playspace Design Workshop, Parts A & B

July 14, 2018 @ 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

Are you a teacher, school administrator, child care provider, business owner or homeowner who would like to create or enhance a nature-based playspace? Phyllis McKenzie, lead playspace designer in Riveredge’s new Playing Naturally initiative and naturalist, will lead two great workshop sessions that will both help you get started with the natural playspace transformation, and later, on finding the perfect plants to enhance your playspace further. You can register for only one session, or get a discount for signing up for both sessions and a whole day of learning!

Session A, 9 AM to 12 PM: Learn to create a nature based play space in your school, center, backyard or subdivision! This hands-on workshop will provide you with the tools to undertake the process of transforming your outdoor space into a natural play space. We’ll discuss nature play, natural playspaces, risks and safety. With your site and kids in mind, develop goals, consider resources, share concerns, and begin designing your playspace. Phyllis will lead participants through the first steps of developing an engaging and effective playspace or outdoor classroom.

Session B, 1 to 4 PM: Outdoor classrooms and play spaces need plants! During this hands-on design workshop, participants will learn ways to attract pollinators, create quiet spaces, encourage budding naturalists, and provide materials for loose parts play in natural playspaces and outdoor classrooms. In this session, we’ll talk more about plantings for your play area. Participants continuing from the morning session will further develop their project designs, incorporating flowers, trees, vegetable gardens and shrubs. Phyllis McKenzie, Playing Naturally playspace designer and naturalist, will guide participants in plant selections, care and maintenance. Register for Part A, Part B, or Both. Price reduced if registering for both.

You can learn more about the Playing Naturally initiative and the benefit of natural playspaces here and if you have any questions about either session, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Phyllis at 262-375-2715 or pmckenzie@riveredge.us.
