2010 Late Winter and Early Spring Field Trip Schedule
(Includes reminders about selected trips organized by the Wisconsin Society for Ornithology (WSO))
January 1, 2010 (Friday)
A New Year Means a New List (RBC): All things old are new again with the dawn of a new year, so join us at 5 a.m. at the Dairy Queen in Saukville (Hwys. 33/I-43) where we will set out to do some owling. Then we’ll warm up with a 7 a.m. breakfast at Harry’s Restaurant in downtown Port Washington. We’ll bird the lakefront beginning around 8 a.m (you can meet us near the boat ramps if you skip the owling and breakfast) before we move north to Harrington Beach State Park and Sheboygan. Dress warm and bring some energy foods and lunch.
January 9, 2010 (Saturday)
Winter Birding: Gulls and Waterfowl on the Milwaukee Lakefront (WSO) – Meet at 8 a.m. at the South Shore Yacht Club (on Lake Michigan about six blocks south of the Hoan Bridge). Dress warmly and bring a bag lunch if you wish. Trip often travels north along the lakefront. See WSO web site to confirm details.

Lake Michigan shoreline gulls and other winter birds (RBC) – Join us for breakfast at Harry’s Restaurant in downtown Port Washington at 6:30 a.m. or meet us at 7:30 a.m. at the south end of the Port Washington harbor parking lot to check out the harbor well, then head north along the lake. Bring a bag lunch.
March 5-7 (Friday to Sunday)
North Woods Winter Birds (RBC) -- We will rendezvous at 7 a.m. Friday along CTH W just north of Exit 143 (Bancroft) on I-39 at the Buena Vista Grasslands; we will search for prairie chickens and short-eared owls, redpolls, etc. We then will work our way north to Eagle River where the club has booked 9 nonsmoking double rooms at the Bridgewater Inn in Eagle River for that Friday and Saturday; each has two beds and a rate of $60 a night; rooms have been prepaid and will be assigned by the trip leader. Of course, you are free to stay elsewhere, but the motel will serve as our headquarters and we will leave from there predawn Saturday in search of spruce grouse, then work our way through the Nicolet National Forest for black-backed woodpecker, boreal chickadee, pine and evening grosbeak, both redpolls, both crossbills, gray jay, raven, Bohemian waxwing, northern goshawk, northern shrike, purple finch, etc. On Sunday morning we will make our plans based on our success the previous day and then bird our way home. If you plan to attend , you must register with RBC field trip chair Carl Schwartz at cschwartz3@wi.rr.com or call him at 414-416-3272. Some details of this trip are subject to change as weather and birding opportunities change and we want to keep you up to date.
