Riveredge Nature Center is pleased to announce the recent development of new Girl Scout programming specially designed to complement and enrich the “It’s Your Planet—Love It!” curriculum. Our programs will help your girls make valuable connections between their curriculum and the natural and human world and encourage them to take leadership in protecting the environment for future generations. Our programming is designed to help your troops earn their "It's Your Planet-- Love It!" awards and other badges. We hope to see you at Riveredge!
For Daisies
Seeds Festival
1.5 hour program offered in the Fall; call to schedule
Meet “Jenny” Appleseed and learn how to make apple cider, hunt for seeds in the forest and field, and learn about a current project at Riveredge to manage invasive plants. You will also make a creative masterpiece to take back to your troop meeting place to remind you of your adventures. This program helps your troop earn their Firefly Award (learn nature-related skills) and Clover Award (learn about natural areas).

Maple Sugarin' for Scouts and Youth Groups
Saturday, March 13, 12-1:45pm and 2:15-4pm
The sap is running and sugarin' time is here. Head into the sugarbush with a naturalist to tap a tree, gather sap, and crowd around the evaporator to see how boiling sap becomes syrup. Enjoy the final product on a pancake before heading home. This program helps your troop earn their Firefly Award (nature-related skills) and Clover Award (learn about natural areas).

Earth Day Work and Learn
Saturday, April 24, 9am-12pm
Looking for a project for your troop’s Clover Award? Join us for Earth Day Work and Learn to help protect natural areas at Riveredge. Get your hands dirty planting seeds in the organic children’s garden, help remove invasive species from our prairies and forests, or embark on a trash treasure hunt to clean up our grounds.

A Water Cycle Adventure
2 hour program offered Fall and Spring; call to schedule
In this hands-on program, you will discover the world of water at Riveredge as you embark on a magical adventure following a drop of water through the water cycle. Along the way, you will conduct an experiment to see how water filters through soil, search for critters that depend on pond ecosystems, and pay a visit to Riveredge’s Engineered Wetland Wastewater Treatment System. This program is a great introduction to the water cycle and the travel of water through natural systems. It also earns your troop the Earth and Sky Try-it!

Wintry Water Workshop
Saturday, January 30, 10am-12pm
Discover the importance of water in our winter landscape as you try out snowshoes, conduct watery experiments, explore a frozen pond, and more. You’ll also get a chance to warm up inside as you delve into the microscopic world of water to take a closer look at your pond discoveries. Through your wintry water explorations, you’ll earn the Water Everywhere Try-It.

SAVE Water and SHARE Water Awards
Looking for a project for your SAVE Water and SHARE Water Awards? Consider partnering with Riveredge Nature Center to organize a Milwaukee River clean-up or advocate on behalf of Riveredge’s sturgeon restoration project.

For Juniors
A Starry Night Hike
2 hour program offered in Fall or Spring; call to schedule
Learn how to use a sky chart, search for constellations and planets in the night sky, and perform experiments to better understand light pollution and its effects on humans and wildlife. After exploring the night sky, your girls will combine their creative energies to produce a collage of their discoveries. Your girls will complete two Energize activities in this program, bringing them closer to earning the ENERGIZE Award! If they have already completed the Energize Award, they can apply the activities towards earning the Sky Search Badge.

Trash into Treasure
2.5 hour program offered in Fall or Spring; call to schedule

Wondering what to do with all that plastic? Join us for a hands-on craft session as we weave, knit, or crochet plastic waste into treasures. Along the way, we’ll discuss the problem of plastic and its over-use in packaging. After we finish our craft projects, we’ll head outside to see what sustainable packaging ideas we can get from nature! Your girls will complete two Energize activities in this program, bringing them closer to earning the ENERGIZE Award! If they have already completed the Energize Award, the activities can be applied towards earning the Eco-Action Badge or the “Making” Hobbies Badge.

Amazing Energy Workshop
Saturday, January 30, 10am-12pm
Learn about the factors affecting a building’s energy efficiency by experimenting with different building materials and discovering simple ways to make existing buildings more energy efficient. Then you’ll embark on an energy challenge to put your skills to the test! This program provides your girls with background knowledge and experience that will help them complete the energy audit for the Investigate Award.

Natural Cleaners
1.5 hour program offered Fall, Winter, and Spring; call to schedule
Many conventional cleaning supplies contain harsh or toxic chemicals that can be harmful for humans and the Earth. Learn how these cleaners impact human and environmental health and how to make safe, low-cost alternatives. Experiment with easy recipes for natural cleaners, and make sure to try out your samples at home! Your girls will learn about chemicals that can affect air quality, bringing them closer to earning their Aware Award.

LiA Award Opportunities: Winter
Looking for an opportunity to earn your Leaders in Action Award? Cadettes are invited to assist with planning and running stations at the Wintry Water Workshop for Brownies and/or the Amazing Energy Workshop for Juniors held on Saturday, January 30, 2009, from 10am-12pm. Maple Sugarin' Leadership Opportunities
Dive into maple sugarin' season and hone your leadership skills by helping with the Maple Sugarin' for Scouts and Youth Groups programs on Saturday, March 13 from 12-4pm. Or return to pioneer days and lead a station at the Maple Sugar Magic Open House on Saturday, March 20 from 10am-3pm. Your troop will gain both leadership skills and nature knowledge.

Sow What? offers Senior Girl Scouts many opportunities to get involved at Riveredge. Possible projects include:
- Assisting in the organic children’s garden
- Assisting with the development and implementation of the new permaculture project
- Attending or organizing a program in the Food For Thought Series
- Attending or organizing a workshop on agriculture or composting

For Ambassadors
Have a passion for justice? Ambassador Girl Scouts are invited to attend Riveredge’s Films that Matter Series and Riveredge Speaks Out lectures to further their understanding of justice-related issues. Girls might even want to plan and lead a justice-related program for one of the series at Riveredge as part of their Sage Award. Volunteer Opportunties:
Saturday, July 17, 2010: Port Washington Fish Day Parade
Riveredge is in need of young people who will walk with a trailer that holds a giant sturgeon and carry a banner promitng the Sturgeon release in fall. Volunteers can wear their Girl Scout attire if they would like.
October 2, 2010, 10-3pm: Sturgeon Fest at Thiensville Park
We would like to find Girl Scouts who are interested in setting up a booth promoting both Girl Scouts and Riveredge Nature Center. Scouts who attend can distribute brochures.

When registering, please be prepared to provide the following information:
- Scout leader's name, address, phone number, and email address
- Name of program
- Date and time availability for desired program
- Number of participants and age level
Pre-registration is required for all scout programs. Also, please note that we require a program deposit fee of $20 for over 10 participants or $10 for less than 10 participants. We do not refund the deposit if the group cancels within one week of the scheduled program date.
